This module introduces the learners to the knowledge, skills and competences necessary for effective management within the context of the business of Tourism and Hospitality. The aim of this module is to develop the key understanding of managing in the hospitality and tourism business sector, particularly in relation to people, facilities, and the business resource.

Recognise current management issues relevant to tourism and hospitality, the micro and macro environment. |

Describe the functions of management and the challenges which a new manager may face. |

Identify the principles and practices of management to include planning and decision making. |

Identify various types of organisational structure and design . |
LO5 |
Examine the practical application of people management in the hospitality and tourism workplace, particularly the areas of motivation, leadership and retention. |

Business ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability, the micro and macro environment, introduction to corporate governance

Planning and Decision Making
The planning process and obstacles to planning, operational, tactical and strategic planning, the decision making process, decision making models, the control process.

Organisation Structure and Design
Specialisation, chain of command, decentralisation, span of control, mechanistic and organic organisations.

Motivation and Leadership
Practical ways to lead and motivate, current issues in motivation, leadership theories and styles, empowerment.

People Management
Manpower planning, recruitment and retention, talent management, performance appraisal, reward management, staff development, employer branding, work-life balance.
