Module Description: This module will introduce the student to IT applications used specifically in the hospitality industry as well the application of existing IT packages to hospitality needs. The module will also examine the role of IT in the delivery of quality service, efficient work practices, improved decision making and competitive advantage within the hospitality sector.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Evaluate the role of IT in enhancing customer service and personalisation in hospitality.
LO2 Evaluate the role of IT in the development of efficient work practices in hospitality.
LO3 Operate hospitality specific IT applications including Property Management System (PMS), Electronic Point Of Sale (EPOS) and the use of Excel spreadsheets for managing in hospitality.
LO4 Examine contemporary IT issues in the hospitality sector.
LO5 Understand the role of the hospitality manager in building enterprise architecture and technology sourcing.

Introduction to Hospitality IT Systems
The nature and scope of IT applications available in the hospitality sector, system type and level of IT usage in the Irish hospitality sector. The role of IS in hospitality and the need for the management of IT.
Hospitality IT Systems, Data and Knowledge Management
Functional and transaction processing systems in hospitality. Management of functional and TPS for efficient and effective service. The nature of data, information and knowledge in the hospitality sector and the use of data and knowledge management systems for competitive advantage.
Managing IT for Competitive Advantage
Competitive advantage in the hospitality sector. The role of IT in the provision of quality service, the role of IT in the decision-making process, the role of IT in promoting efficient work practices and agility within the hospitality sector.
Hospitality I.T. Applications
Management of PMS, EPOS, restaurant reservation systems, CRM solutions and Microsoft Office applications - for management reporting and small business solutions.
Contemporary issues of IT in the Hospitality Sector
The digital transformation in hospitality, cybersecurity and digital ethics for hospitality managers, data management and analytics for small business, IoT, AI, AR/VR, network and connectivity technologies, Distributed Ledger Technologies.
Investment in I.T infrastructure
Strategic IT management; enterprise architecture stakeholders, identification of value proposition, designing target EA, acquiring IT applications - build, buy or lease? Planning implementation, EA governance.
