Module Description: This module provides an overview of human resource management, key issues and implications in the management process as well as an examination of the trends and patterns within the hospitality industry. In terms of SDGs this module makes reference to Number 1,3,4,5,8,9,10,11, 16 and 17.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO3 Describe key pieces of employment legislation and their implications in managing people in a hospitality business.

LO5 Identify sources of conflict in the workplace and how to manage the resolution of disputes.
LO6 Create a self evaluation of technical and soft skills required to develop careers in the hospitality industry.

Introduction to the Role and Functions of Human Resource Management
Historical developments, core activities, models of HRM, changing role of HRM. Trends and challenges for HRM in the hospitality business.
Talent Acquisition and Retention in Hospitality
Role of manpower planning, job analysis, recruitment and selection, role of CPD, retention strategies. Skills portfolio for hospitality. EDI in the workplace
Employment law and its application from an HRM perspective
Contract of Employment, review of most relevant pieces of legislation, implementation of legislation from a HR perspective, Grievance and disciplinary procedures. Psychological contract.
Reward Management
Pay systems and benefits, conditions of employment, job evaluation, pay as a motivator. Trends and practices in the hospitality industry.
Performance Management
Performance management,role, functions and methods. The role of appraisal and how to make it a successful experience.
IR & Resolution of Disputes
Frames of reference in IR, conflict in the workplace, resolution of disputes, the negotiation process, Workplace Relations Commission, Industrial Relations Act 1990.
