Module Description: This module examines the role of movement in a child’s development from birth to age 12. It equips the learner with the competencies, knowledge and skills required for planning, implementing and evaluating physical activity and movement opportunities for children. It explores the role of movement within the Montessori approach to education.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe and discuss the role of purposeful movement for a developing child (birth to 12 years).
LO2 Plan, implement and evaluate learning opportunities for children aged birth to 12 years through movement and physical activity.
LO3 Identify the holistic benefits of movement and physical activity for a child’s development.
LO4 Select and demonstrate a range of basic movement skills across a range of disciplines.
LO5 Relate the Montessori approach to movement in Education to current curricular frameworks in Early Years and Primary Years.

Indicative Content
Movement and the theory of Montessori
Overview of movement within the theory of Montessori. Examine the Montessori approach in relation to relevant curricular frameworks from birth to 12 years: Aistear and the Physical Education Primary Curriculum.
Motor Development
Theories of motor development, explanation of gross and fine motor skills, stages of motor development and perceptual motor awareness.
Fundamental Movement Skills
Definition and explanation of fundamental movement skills. Categories of fundamental movement skills and relevance for lifelong participation in physical activity, movement and sport.
Physical activity and Benefits of movement
Components of physical fitness. Physical activity guidelines for children. Benefits of physical activity and movement: physiological, language, cognitive, social emotional and creative development. Risky active play and benefit analysis.
Practical Learning opportunities
Dance and introduction to gymnastics. Cooperative games and modified games to suit the stage of a child’s development. Planning, implementing and evaluating safe, effective and creative movement experiences. Outdoor active play.

Assessment Description
Written project assignment: the learner submits a project based on research on movement and physical activity within the Montessori approach. This assignment will incorporate both in class learning and self -directed learning

Assessment Description
Practical Teaching and participation: Reflection of the learner’s participation in a range of practical activities. Assessment of the learner leading a group of peers or children in a practical setting.
