This module is the study of active play and movement for young children. It examines the role of active play and physical activity in the overall development of the young child. It equips the learner with the organisational and practical skills required for planning, implementing and evaluating active play and movement opportunities for young children.

Indicative Content |
Physical activity and Physical fitness
Definition of physical activity, benefits of physical activity for children (physiological, health and psycho-social benefits)
Components of physical fitness, determinants of physical activity for young people, recommended participation guidelines for young children. Physiological effects of exercise - cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance.

Active Play
Concept of play and movement, types and functions of play, current Irish Play Policy (2004) - Ready, Steady, Play.

Motor Development - birth to three and three to six years
Theory of motor development, explanation of gross and fine motor skills, phases of motor development, overview of perceptual motor development.

Activity planning
Aims and objectives, effective and safe group management skills. Overview and linkage of current national frameworks, regulations and guidelines (Aistear, Buntús Start and Primary Physical Education Curriculum).

Practical Activities
Range of activities incorporating fundamental movement skills: balance, object control and locomotion. Cooperative fun games, dance and basic gymnastics. Observation of movement.
|
Childhood Obesity
Irish and International statistics on childhood obesity. Body mass index (BMI) concept. Government policy and current interventions for children.
