Module Description: This module looks at social entrepreneurship and innovative design thinking and their role in the tourism and hospitality sector in response to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Evaluate the contribution of entrepreneurs and innovative practices to the modern tourism and hospitality industry.
LO2 Evaluate key processes involved in entrepreneurship, innovation, design thinking and the role of the entrepreneur as an agent for change.
LO3 Examine the 'Idea Generation' process through the use of design thinking and the evolution of a commercially viable business opportunity from an idea.
LO4 Apply the concepts of social entrepreneurship to the tourism and hospitality sector.
LO5 Critique the impact of social entrepreneurship on the tourism and hospitality sector and the wider society.

Indicative Content
Introduction to Entrepreneurship
Key principles, characteristics motivations of entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship as a career choice. Types of entrepreneurs. The role of entrepreneurship in economic development and the importance of the small and medium enterprise.
Innovation and Design Thinking
Key theories of business innovation. Types of innovation. The use of a design thinking approach to innovation; problem finding, fact-finding, problem definition, idea finding, evaluation, selection and solution implementation.
Social Entrepreneurship
Characteristics of a social enterprise and traits of a social entrepreneur. Assess social impact and social return on investment. Social entrepreneurs as agents for change. Relevance of social entrepreneurship to the tourism and hospitality industry. A focus on linkages with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Feasibility Analysis & Business Model Canvas
Assess the commercial viability of a business idea through the use of the value proposition and the business model canvas.
General Entrepreneurial Activities
Can include; intellectual property and patents, financing businesses, and succession planning. Government role in entrepreneurship support and policy development. Dealing with business expansion. Intrapreneurship and competitive advantage.
