Module Description: |
The student will learn the use of GIS for data acquisition, analysis, and management. The student will work on spatial data in both raster and vector format, as well as satellite data in this module. Topics including the development of high-resolution professional maps using advanced editing tools, analysis of remote sensing data, 3D visualization of spatial data, multicriteria analysis, automation of GIS workflow using graphical modeller will be introduced to the students.

LO1 |
Develop theoretical and practical knowledge on different types of spatial data including raster, vector, RADAR and remote sensing multispectral data. |
LO2 |
Use multicriteria analysis on spatial data for decision making. |
LO3 |
Use a 3D visualization tool to create maps by integrating 2D spatial data and elevation information. |
LO4 |
Use open source remote sensing data from different services provided by European Space Agency and NASA to analyse the raw multispectral satellite data using supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms for developing landcover maps. |
LO5 |
Analyse RADAR data to perform change detection analysis. |

Indicative Content |
Spatial Analyst Tool
Understanding the spatial analysis tools in the GIS software to perform interpolation using kriging; converting raster and vector data; creating composite images by combining multispectral bands data; combining multiple spatial data to generate new shapefiles by using clipping, erase, intersect and buffer tools.

Multicriteria Analysis
Coupling multiple geo-spatial data and information to generate maps as end-product which can be readily used by policy makers to take decisions.

3D Visualization
Integrating 2D spatial data with elevation information to create 3D visual maps.

Satellite Database
Accessing open source multispectral and RADAR database obtained by LANDSAT and SENTINEL satellites from European Space Agency and NASA websites.

Landcover Classification
Using unsupervised and supervised classification algorithms to develop landcover maps from multispectral satellite data and using google earth data for accuracy assessment.

RADAR Data Analysis
Performing atmospheric correction of RADAR data and using the data for change detection of landcover in Irish catchments.
