Module Description: This module will focus on how best to use the Arts as a pedagogical tool within the early childhood education and care sector. Students will devise developmentally appropriate learning opportunities for children from birth to three and three to six. Avenues of investigation and exploration, through Music, Art and Drama will be explored using an Inquiry Based Learning approach. National Frameworks, Regulation and Guidelines (e.g. Aistear and Siolta) will inform the structure, delivery and assessment of the module.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Explain Inquiry Based Learning as an approach to fostering creativity in the child birth to three and three to six
LO3 Illustrate the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for devising appropriate learning opportunities within the Arts
LO4 Construct provocations to promote avenues of inquiry leading to developmentally appropriate authentic learning opportunities for children birth to three and three to six
LO5 Effectively communicate a knowledge and awareness of health and safety issues pertaining to Music, Art and Drama in an Early Childhood Education and Care context.
LO6 Show understanding of the artistic elements of Music, Art and Drama.

Aural images. The voice- singing and speaking. Free and guided play. Developmentally appropriate learning targets. Communicating objectives and methodologies as per Inquiry Based Learning Approach. Overview of modern methodological approaches to music learning. Addressing; social, emotional, cognitive, physical and language development. Subject linkage. Health and Safety considerations
Art and Learning
Visual awareness, communication and expression. Selecting appropriate provocations. Exploring transient art, small world and pretend play. Examining the theory of loose parts. Developmentally appropriate learning targets. Communicating objectives and methodologies as per Inquiry Based Learning Approach. Utilising materials such as light boxes, provocation trays and projectors effectively and efficiently. Addressing; social, emotional, cognitive, physical and language development. Subject linkage. Health and Safety considerations.
Drama and Learning
Creative, imaginative role and flexible play. Focus and engagement. Voice, body and movement. Communication and expression. Selecting appropriate provocations. Exploring small world and pretend play. Devising developmentally appropriate learning targets. Communicating objectives and methodologies as per Inquiry Based Learning Approach. Utilising Drama props effectively and efficiently.
