Module Description: This module will introduce the historical development of housing in Ireland since the nineteenth century and explore the social cultural, economic and environmental factors that influence housing requirements, location, planning, building design, interior aesthetics and materials.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe key building styles and identify significant development in housing styles in Ireland since the nineteenth century.
LO2 Explain the context and development of housing provision in Ireland.
LO3 Critically discuss the factors that influence house building and design.
LO4 Review the process of house construction.
LO5 Illustrate the elements and principles of design with focus on interior design and use of materials.

Housing Styles
Historical development of housing styles in Ireland from the nineteenth century onwards.
Housing Provision
Variations in housing requirements, an evaluation of housing provision in Ireland, including social and affordable housing.
House Building and Design
Factors that influence the choice of location, house style, and design and construction of the house.
House Interior
Principles of design and factors that influence the interior design of the home. Ergonomics and room planning. Types of floors, wall finishes, furniture, lighting etc.

SDG3 – Good Health and Well Being; through the design, construction and maintenance of healthy living and working environments. SDG13 Climate Action; design, construct and maintain buildings and the built environment to combat climate change and its actions.
