Module Description: This module is designed to give students the requisite knowledge and understanding of children's development and learning with particular emphasis on children from birth to 12 years.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Explain developmental sequences and progress across all aspects of children's learning and development.
LO2 Discuss the importance of a child centred, developmentally appropriate inclusive environment for all children from birth to 12.
LO3 Describe the factors affecting children's learning and development.
LO4 Identify requirements to promote the learning and development of children aged from birth to 12 years.
LO5 Manage child observation and record keeping for the purpose of observing children aged from birth to 12 years.

Holistic Development
Growth patterns and child development from birth to 12 years. Milestones. How play as a process promotes holistic development. Physical, Cognitive, Language, Social and Emotional domains of child development. Developmental sequences and progress across all aspects of children's learning and development. Wide variation in normative development.
Supporting children's learning and development
How best to create environments that support children's development from birth to 12 years. Indoor and outdoor environments that meet the needs of children's development, the prepared environment, play and activity, inclusive environments, accepting welcoming and valuing every child in an inclusive prepared environment. Factors that promote developments. Requirements/strategies to promote development.
Children and childhood
Different concepts of children and childhood throughout history, nature-nurture debate in child development. Current understanding of children and childhood. Child development as a combination of observable biological development and social experience within a specific, cultural and historical context. Social, cultural and environmental factors that impact on development.
Child observation and assessment
Reasons for observing children's development. What can be observed and assessed? Naturalistic and clinical settings, Participative and non-participative observation techniques. Different techniques for observing and assessing learning and development. Formally and informally observing the holistic nature of children's development in learning opportunities.
