Module Description: To introduce students to key concepts in the formal study of education so as to support their future development as post-primary school teachers.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Discuss the basic structure of the education system in Ireland, including post-primary schooling.
LO2 Outline an understanding of the key concepts of teaching, learning and assessment in the school system.
LO3 Articulate a variety of means through which post-primary school students can be engaged in their learning through active and interactive pedagogical approaches.
LO4 Discuss the main elements of best managing and supporting adolescent behaviour and learning in a classroom setting.
LO5 Reflect critically on their own educational experience through the lens of a student teacher.

Reflecting on personal experiences of education and schooling. What is education? What is schooling?
Education and the school system in Ireland
Structure of the Irish education system. Understanding post primary schooling in Ireland. Junior and Senior Cycle education.
Understanding key processes of education and schooling
What are teaching, learning and assessment? Fostering teaching learning and assessment in post-primary classrooms. Active learning and progressive teaching.
Supporting learning in classrooms
Classroom management. Promoting positive classroom behaviour. Teaching questioning and feedback. Assessment of and for learning.

Assessment Description
Continuous Assessment: 1 x 3,000-word reflective portfolio project of key educational issues. The portfolio will be broken into key parts with ongoing feedback provided.
