Module Description: This module is an introduction to Information and Communications Technology in the realm of general business environments, combining both theory and practical elements of IT. The module includes an overview of information systems used in industry, the role of system security and evolving telecommunications and social media environment and its impact on organisations. The practical components of this module focuses on creating, editing and constructing business documents and presentations.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Examine the evolving nature of telecommunications and social media and its impact on businesses.
LO3 Outline the security issues and data privacy measures that impact organisations.
LO4 Create, edit, enhance and format, a range of Word documents and Excel formulas and charts.
LO5 Design, edit and create a PowerPoint presentation.

Indicative Content
Information Systems for Business
Identify and examine the fundamentals of IT systems e.g. supply chain management; the role of big data and analysis in business; using social media platforms for engagement with customers and businesses. Industry case studies with a focus on specific niches e.g. tourism and hospitality, culinary arts.
Telecommunications
Basic telecommunications concepts, 4G technology moving to 5G; connection speeds; mobile device management
Security and Privacy Issues
Systems security; cyber security and controls; hacking, phishing, ransomware; data protection and GDPR; Social engineering, virus, worms, bugs; VPNs, multifactor authentication, antivirus, biometrics, BYOD risks and benefits. Industry case studies.

Adding text, drawing tools, pictures, charts, shapes, notes, slide show, animations, transitions, recording
Word
Editing and creating word documents e.g. linking contents page to headings; use of spacing, headings, font size, borders, find and replacing, spell check, page numbers, margins, bullets and numbering indents, tables
Excel
Spreadsheet formulas, functions; printing, saving, editing; headers and footers; adding, deleting, naming and linking worksheets; creating and enhancing charts; sorting spreadsheets; functions (sum, average, max, min, introduction to basic if function)
