Module Description: |
This module furnishes students with the knowledge, skills and competences to provide for child health and development across a range of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) environments. Students will consider their role in promoting health and well-being in the early years, from an evidence-based perspective, in accordance with regulations (as outlined in the Quality and Regulatory Framework), policy, frameworks and the First 5 government strategy for babies, young children and their families.

LO1 |
Describe the growth and development of young children including developmental milestones in physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional domains of development. |
LO2 |
Identify the significant role of the adult in ensuring the care, education, health, well-being and safety of children from birth to 6 years. |
LO3 |
Apply the relevant legislation, regulations, frameworks, policies and procedures which impact the health and development of children in ECEC. |
LO4 |
Examine a range of common childhood illnesses and the value of health education, promotion and prevention. |
LO5 |
Design documentation and record keeping as required by national practice frameworks, guidelines, regulations. |

Indicative Content |
Holistic Development
Holistic development, the integrated nature of children development in the following domains; Physical, Cognitive, Language, Social, Emotional, Moral, Spiritual, Creative and Cultural awareness. Growth patterns and child development from infancy to toddler to school age. The newborn, their weight, typical development, and developmental milestones. Cephalocaudal law and proximodistal law.
The nine dimensions of children’s development. Reciprocal impacts between play and development. Positive play-based early learning experiences (First 5).

Role of the Adult
The role of the adult in ensuring developmentally appropriate child centred care and education. The significant role of the adult in ensuring the health, well-being and safety of children from birth to 6 years. Capacity to reflect upon role in supporting and ensuring quality experiences for each child. Role model for children and their families.Partnership with parents. The Key Person Approach. The Triangle of Trust, Funds of Knowledge.

Health Promotion and Prevention of Illness
Signs, symptoms and treatments of common childhood illnesses to include exclusion periods, legal requirements for illness, policy, procedures and record keeping, notifiable diseases, to include reporting procedures of these as well as injury or fatality. Importance of immunisation, to include the immunisation schedule. Monitoring and observation, administration of medication. Guidelines to prevent Sudden Infant Death.
Partnership with parents. Identification of how social and environmental factors can impact on childhood health such as - health screening, vaccination schedule, family, lifestyle, environment, education, culture and communities, Síolta Standard 9 – Health and Welfare. Early Years Quality and Regulatory Framework. First 5 strategy for babies, young children and their families.

Documentation, Recording and Reporting
Relevant legislation, regulations, frameworks, policies and procedures which impact the holistic care and well-being of children.
Documentation of all relevant details of for babies or children attending ECEC, including family history, feeding patterns, food allergies or health issues etc., methods of administration, storage and record keeping.
