Module Description: This module develops key musicianship skills of performance, analysis and notational fluency with reference to tonal practice of the early nineteenth century.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Sight-read vocal music of moderate difficulty in up to four parts
LO3 Harmonise chorale melodies in the style of J.S. Bach

LO5 Demonstrate an expanded range of technical conducting gestures

Indicative Content
Aural skills
Sight-reading and part-singing of vocal music of increasing complexity, including Bach chorales; aural perception of melodic, harmonic and textural elements; notation of harmonic and contrapuntal excerpts from the literature, with a focus on Bach chorales; vocal improvisation on harmonic progressions.
Advanced harmony and analysis
Analysis of J.S. Bach's techniques of choral harmonisation; harmonisation of chorale melodies in the style of J.S. Bach.
Conducting
Editing and preparing biographies for presentation; public speaking and speech structure; analysis of poster and programme design; musical interpretation and textual integrity; effective choral communication.
