Module Description: This module will include an introduction to spreadsheets in the labs and business information systems in the theory section. The practical element will cover such topics as spreadsheet formulae, functions, linking worksheets, charts, sorting data and spreadsheet protection. The theory section will cover topics such as components of IT infrastructure, understanding information, introduction to information systems and business applications of information systems.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Introduction to File Management
File management concepts, security, encryption, folders vs. tags, back-ups, file extensions.
Spreadsheets
Spreadsheet formulas, functions; printing, saving, editing; inserting header and footers, adding, deleting, naming and linking worksheets; creating charts; sorting spreadsheets; basic functions (sum, average, min, max, simple if) and spreadsheet protection.
Introducing Information Systems
Introduction to information systems. Basic concepts of Input - Organisation - Output of data. Data vs. information. Common categories of information systems and business applications of information systems.
Managing IT Threats
Potential areas of risk (networks, software, processes, people). Managing the threat (firewalls, antivirus, processes, authentication)
Improving Business Efficiencies
Business processes and their components. IS supporting business processes. Collaborative computing environments. Cloud Computing in practice. Big Data in practice.
