Module Description: This module examines the various business models that have shaped and are the catalyst for change in the aviation industry, concentrating on issues and practices that have changed the industry and new areas which continue to form the sectoral landscape.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Evaluate the history of the aviation industry with respect to the beginning of commercial passenger travel and the birth and development of the legacy carrier model.
LO2 Critically evaluate the influence of low cost models on the long standing legacy models.
LO3 Assess the range of aviation business models that exist for aviation industry businesses other than airlines including private aviation, supporting functions such as ground operations maintenance and repair organisations (MRO's) and emerging technologies such as Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).
LO4 Evaluate the cargo sector of the industry and its importance in the global supply chain.
LO5 Discuss how existing business models will adapt to environmental and economic change and the effect this could have on their business activity.

Indicative Content
History of aviation business
Understand how commercial passenger travel grew to become a global industry, history of legacy carriers, state owned airlines, airports movement from military fields to commercial airport operations. The growth of the sector due to early stage globalization and the dawn of the jet age. Domination of sector by legacy carriers and state owned airlines and airports and the transition to privatization.
The growth of the Low Cost Carrier
The changes the industry brought about by the Low Cost Carrier model, focus on costs, competition with established industry leaders, customer perceptions of brand vs value. Pricing strategy, commercial relationships, expansion, challenges of growth, development of new markets and new industry benchmarks.
Supporting businesses within aviation
Supporting businesses such as ground handling, fuel suppliers, service agents, security, corporate aviation and service providers. The importance of third party service providers as a supporting function to the aviation sector, and the symbiotic relationships that exist within the industry.
The cargo sector
Origins of the cargo sector, dedicated cargo services and dual service carriers, importance of air freight to the global supply chain and its role in supporting wide span of businesses. Relationship between air freight and globalization, effects on sector of Covid-19 and the rapid growth experienced. Characteristics of the sector when compared to alternative methods such as marine, road, rail.
Adapting aviation business models
Effects on the industry of cultural and social changes, adapting models to meet the evolution of demand. Impact of environmental issues and the targets and changes in policies that have resulted from a push towards sustainability and climate responsibility. Impact on aviation business models of changes brought about due to economic cycles and unexpected global events.
