Module Description: This module is an introduction to Information and Communications Technology (ICT), combining the theoretical elements and practical elements of IT. It includes information systems overview, system security and changing telecommunications environment and its impact on organisations. The practical components of this module focuses on creating, enhancing and producing business documents.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO3 Explain the IT security and data privacy measures that a business must implement.
LO4 Create, edit, format, and produce a range of business documents word processing package application.

Indicative Content
Information Systems within the Business Environment
Identify and examine systems that are used within the business environment; how data is used in the business environment eg big data, analytics; the importance of ICT within modern day businesses; hardware and software terminology; industry examples
Telecommunications
Basic telecommunications concepts, 4G technology moving to 5G; connection speeds; improved functionality; cloud computing; virtualisation
Security and Privacy Issues
IT systems security; cyber security and controls; hackers, phishing and vishing; data protection; data privacy and control; social media content and organisation fair usage statements; case analysis of data security issues
Word Processing
Inserting, deleting, moving, copying text, character enhancement, formatting, margins, line spacing, indenting, paragraphing, headings, document layout, pagination, headers/footers, bullets and numbering, borders and shading. WordArt, Clipart, shapes, smart art graphics, tables with alphanumeric characters
Spreadsheets
Spreadsheet formulas, functions; printing, saving, editing; headers and footers; adding, deleting, naming and linking worksheets; creating and enhancing charts; sorting spreadsheets; functions (sum, average, max, min, if function), spreadsheet protection. Spreadsheet activities carried out using industry data.
