Module Description: |
This module will introduce the student to the IS Project Management Framework. Students will gain knowledge of the principles of effective project management. Emphasis will be on systems development project management and best practices and skills necessary to ensure successful project delivery.

Describe the basic elements of IS projects and IS project management. |
LO2 |
Discuss the stages of the IS project lifecycle and the IS project framework outlined in the Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK). |
LO3 |
Explain the significance of the various roles involved in IS project management and project team structures. |
LO4 |
Illustrate Project Planning techniques through IS Case study for the areas of project selection, scope, time and cost. |
LO5 |
Develop project plans using project management software. |

Indicative Content |
Introduction to Project Management
Project considerations, the role of the project manager, triple constraints, features of projects, critical
success factors, stakeholders, project management skills, the project development lifecycle, the systems
development lifecycle, project management phases and processes. The PMBOK, the PMI, features of
projects, roles found in systems development projects, management of teams.

The Business Case and Project Execution
The role of the business case and feasibility study, contents of a business case, project scope, the
importance of alternatives, project planning, cost-benefit analysis, benefits of a business case, the role of
software tools in project planning, gantt charts, MS Project. Project, Program and Portfolio selection
methods.

Project Development Lifecycle and Introduction to Agile Principles
Phases in systems development projects, potential added value, deliverables at each phase, the phases
of change, the importance of dealing with resistance, cost of change. Discuss the principles of Agile
software development and how project management methodologies can be mapped to the Agile
environment.

IS Case Analysis
Planning and organising IS projects, managing scope, time, cost. Effective change control and
stakeholder involvement. IS project development case studies.

Microsoft Project
The role of MS Project in the planning, monitoring and controlling of a software implementation project
through Gantt Charts, network diagrams and software tools.
