Module Description: This module introduces sensor electrical networks combining resistors with complex sensor impedances and passive filters; introduction to the use of rectification elements in power supplies and protection networks; DAC/ADC selection for measurement scenarios; phasor diagram analysis of complex electrical networks.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
AC circuits
AC impedance, reactance, net impedance of components in series and in parallel, phase difference between quantities. Phasor diagrams, complex representation of current and voltage.
Signal Conditioning elements
RC filters, signal integration and differentiation. LC circuits and oscillators. LCR circuits; damped simple harmonic motion. Signal modulation/Demodulation. Resonance. Power in ac circuits, power factor, electric motors. A/D and D/A conversion: types of converter, resolution, sampling rate.
Applications
Transformers, diodes and rectification. Voltage regulators. Thevenin’s theorem. Basic power supplies and motors. Diodes as protection devices, Zener diodes. Impedance matching and power transfer. Signal multiplexing, HART Protocol
