Indicative Content
Human Resource Management in the Hospitality Industry
The student will appreciate that the nature of the hospitality industry distinguishes it as a unique industry due to its labour intensive nature. In addition the industry is in many instances seasonal in nature and lends itself to employing employees on a seasonal and short-term basis. The industry has been associated with a semi/unskilled workforce all of which lend themselves to learning about human resource management with a very specific focus. The role of human resource management in achieving organisational growth & success. The role of the human resource manager. Core activities and responsibilities of the human resource function. Background to human resource management development. Organisation structure and human resource management practices. Recognise that the role of the human resource function is an integral part of the organisation's structure and its activities are strategically placed along with all other strategic business activities.
Recruitment and Selection in the Hospitality Industry
The study of recruitment and selection in the hospitality industry is one that needs much deliberation due to the high rates of staff turnover experienced by the industry. Labour Market, human resource planning, job analysis, recruitment methods particularly E recruitment. The constructs of recruitment and selection and how these processes impact on future business success and competitiveness. Assessing and selecting new employees. Understand organisational fit, organisation culture, the selection process, selection methods including the interview process. Short listing for selection, selection techniques, job offer and new trainee induction training.
Performance management system
Understand the construct and importance of an effective employee performance management system including performance appraisal as a performance management tool. Design and apply a performance management system based on best practice theory and practice. Appreciate the impact that such systems have on achieving organisational success.
Reward management system
Remuneration in the hospitality industry - the implications of service charge and tips on reward systems. The components of a reward system including monetary and non-monetary rewards, direct and indirect rewards. Job evaluation and pay equity. The rewards package, pay, incentives and employee benefits. Pay as a motivator. Understand the link between performance management and reward systems as a means of achieving success through efficient and effective employee engagement and reward.
Training and Development
Principles of training and development and the contribution of the training and development programmes towards achieving a successful, competitive and attractive business. The promotion of life long learning opportunities to ensure long term employee engagement and development and fulfilling employee career plans. Understand training methods. Prepare a training plan. Identify the principles of training & development. Understand a number of training methods. Understand the contribution that training & development programmes can make to organizational success.
