Module Description: |
This module will enable the extension of student-centred teaching and assessment strategies applicable to the Home Economics classroom. Students will examine Junior Cycle Home Economics, Leaving Certificate Home Economics and Hotel, Catering and Tourism syllabi, assessment and examinations. This module relates theory to practice thus connecting and contextualizing theory to its practical application through a supervised and supported microteaching experience.

LO1 |
Extend range of effective student-centered assessment techniques, teaching strategies and classroom facilitation and management skills appropriate to a practical and theory-based Home Economics classroom. |
LO2 |
Examine Junior Cycle Home Economics, Leaving Certificate Home Economics and Hotel, Catering and Tourism syllabi, assessment and examinations modes. |
LO3 |
Apply theory to practice to a range of theory and practical based Home Economics JC and LC topics within a Micro Teaching Programme. |
LO4 |
Critically evaluate and appraise pedagogical practice from personal and observational experiences. |

Student-centred assessment techniques, teaching strategies and classroom facilitation and management skills linked to the three discipline area of Home Economics and appropriate to the stages within the post-primary programme. Junior Cycle Home Economics, Leaving Certificate Home Economics and Hotel, Catering and Tourism syllabi and assessment; classroom-based assessment (CBA), JC Practical Food Exam, LC Journal Task, LCA tasks. Professional organisations supporting teaching and learning of Home Economics; PDST, ATHE, IFHE.

Microteaching (MT)
Preparation for MT and professional development; lesson planning, task analysis, differentiation, assessment for and of learning, pitch and pace of content, cross-curricular links, demonstration of knowledge and skills, facilitation of effective learning.

Reflective Practice
Professional reflective practice; personal and professional development to inform a teaching portfolio, develop confidence and act as a foundation for lifelong professional learning and development.
