Key Theories and Concepts in Family Sociology
What is a family?; historical and cultural perspectives on family; theoretical perspectives on families. The 'family' as defined in the constitution, legislation, European Convention on Human Rights, case law. Adoption and family; queer families; blended families; Ireland and women's reproductive rights; Ireland and LGBTQ+ rights. Children and Families Relationship Act and Guardianship of Infants Act.

Challenges facing individuals, families and communities
Generational conflict, work-life balance, cost of living and inflation, poverty, childcare, family breakdown, unemployment, addiction, special needs, technological changes etc. Statutory and non-statutory supports and laws e.g. Rights of the Child, Entitled Leaves e.g. family leave, carers leave, agencies and organisations e.g. Ombudsman for Children.

Marriage and Family
Marriage customs and cultural variations; legal requirements for marriage (in Ireland); factors that effect
marital stability; nullity/separation/divorce; marriage breakdown; effects of marriage breakdown.

Children's First Act, Children and Families Relationship Act and Guardianship of Infants Act. Family mediation and complementary dispute resolution models. Domestic violence legislation. Educational welfare and
special needs legislation. Employment Equality Act and Equal Status Act. Employment Equality Act and Equal Status Act (as amended). Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005.
