Review of the role, functions and current challenges related to Customs in an era of globalisation, having regard for the aims and functions of key influencers e.g. The World Trade Organisation (WTO),The World Customs Organisation (WCO) and trading alliances such as The Single Market. How Customs policies facilitate and interact with global trade while still meeting their enhanced objectives.

From “gatekeeper” to “facilitator” - meeting risk through partnership - the importance of regional and international trade/customs integration (e.g. Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) and Customs and Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) etc.

World Trade Organisation - genesis and evolution. Globalisation and recent trade negotiations (Uruguay & Doha Rounds). The move towards bilateral and plurilateral negotiations e.g Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA - Canada & EU), Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP - US & EU).

World Customs Organisation (WCO) conventions and policies impacting on the national, regional and international role of customs.

Customs Management and Risk Management
The modern standards of customs management and risk management. The importance of duties and taxes, classification of products, license requirements, documentation required by different countries, tariff codes, import permits and Incoterms.

European Customs Integration Policies
Overview of existing and emerging policies of european customs integration and other inter-regional benefits (green customs, CITES, environmental issues, customs ethics, rules of origin and drug enforcement).
