Module Description: This course explores the broad outlines of music in Western culture, and explores key points in the development of the classical tradition in Europe from the 9th to the 21st centuries.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Aesthetics; Elements of style; Influence of patronage; Influence of public taste
Music and the marketplace
The commercialisation of music: Italian opera of the seventeenth century to the publishing houses of the 19th century.
Music and Ideology
Nationalism in 19th and 20th centuries;
20th century developments
Modernism and post-modernism; Music in 20th century Ireland; Cross-influences of popular and commercial music in 20th century
Academic writing
The basics of scholarly writing style and use of citation.
Project writing
Structuring a research project.
Bibliography skills
Accessing and collating appropriate sources for a research project.
