This module seeks to explore the issues relating to context-sensitive performance practice in early music, and to foster an awareness, knowledge and understanding of Irish traditional music.

Historical performance practice
A study of the development of the Early Music Movement, including an introduction to the concepts, principles and evolution of performance practice studies.

An introduction to Irish traditional music.
A survey of Irish traditional instruments; music - dance music and airs; regional styles of instrumental performance.
A study of the Irish song tradition, incorporating sean-nós singing and its influence on the song tradition in the English language, ensemble-playing in the Irish tradition

Workshop sessions in each of the above areas of musical performance
