Module Description: In this module, students will engage with instrumental and/or vocal music of the 17th and 18th centuries in a variety of ways, including practical, analytical and theoretical approaches. Through ensemble performance, students will develop a critical understanding of issues such as performance style and conventions, notation, and implications of tuning systems. The module will explore the sourcing of repertoire both in original manuscript and in modern editions, and will equip students with the analytical, critical, and practical abilities for historically informed performance practice. Students will gain the practical and theoretical knowledge to improvise in early-music style and ornamentation techniques drawn from selected music treatises. Open to all Level 7 students and above.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Exercise appropriate judgement in sourcing and editing repertoire and in developing a concert programme to be performed by available instrumentalists and vocalists.
LO2 Improvise embellishment via techniques such as diminution and ornamentation, and to understand and implement the basics of figured-bass accompaniment in an ensemble setting.
LO3 Demonstrate specialised knowledge and skills in the preparation and performance of 17th and 18th-century repertory.
LO4 To rehearse and perform ensemble repertoire of the baroque era in a historically informed style.

Early Music Ensemble Performance
Rehearsal and performance in an Early Music ensemble. Taking initiative for decisions regarding performing, organising rehearsals, and directing a group, and giving cues
Improvisation and Figured-bass realisation
To implement stylistically appropriate ornamentation techniques according to various treatises, and to understand and implement the basics of figured-bass accompaniment in an ensemble setting
Sourcing repertoire
Finding repertoire from various sources, including websites, and libraries in both original manuscript and modern form.
