Human and organisational behaviour
Development of organisational behaviour. Historical origins of human relations. The nature of organisations. Cultural differences. Organisational behaviour systems. Social systems. Role conflict. Solving conflict. Status.

Management and Shipping
Management and shipping. Differences between ship management and other management. Similar functions of ship management to other management. Constraints that exist in ship management. Human relationships aboard ship.

Communications
Fundamentals of communications. The transfer of information and understanding. Basic modes of communication. Communication barriers. Factors which produce barriers to communications. Methods of improving communication. Communications between management and ships’ staff.

Teamworking
Principles of teamworking. The roles and responsibilities of the team facilitator and the team members. Selecting a team. The effective use of teams in the maritime industry.

Leadership
Leadership principles, leadership styles and leadership traits. Effective leadership styles, appropriate to the maritime industry currently, and in the future. Promoting and harnessing assertive behaviour on board ship and ashore.

Training
Training needs analysis. Training design. Structures and principles in designing trainng programmes. Evaluation of training. Training in the shipping industry and onboard ship. Learning curves.

Social and work environment
Social and work environment. Conformity and factors affecting it. Privacy and factors influencing it. The use of alcohol and drugs. Methods and factors involved in the maintenance of discipline.

Error chain analysis, Situational awareness, Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Procedures, Decision-making, Authority gradient, Human machine interface.
