Module Description: The module will explore concepts of entrepreneurship, innovation and idea generation. It will focus on key business skills such as business planning, business structures, value propositions, commercial strategies, marketing, and tax. Relevant legal areas such as copyright and contract law will also be explored. As the focus of the module is on entrepreneurship, teamwork will be central to the module and its assessment.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO5 Critically assess the complexities involved in the creation of a business venture in the creative industries.

Idea Generation and Business planning
Idea generation. Business planning. Scalability, profitability and longevity. Value propositions, commercial strategies and marketing.
Contracts
Fundamentals of contract law.
Copyright
Fundamentals of copyright law.
Professional Advisors
The role of professional advisors (accountants, lawyers). What is expected of professional advisors.
Structures
Business structures (sole trader, company, partnership).
Tax
Exploring and applying the rules related to VAT.

Assessment Description
Group Entrepreneurship Assessment:

Teams of 3-4 students to devise an innovative business proposition related to their degree specialisation; 15-minute team presentation to be given during class. Students will be assessed as a group on the basis of, for example, viability and originality of their proposition, business model selected, strategy to commercialise and bring their chosen product/service to market, etc.

Assessment Description
A 2,500-word report on the business proposal developed as part of the group project. Assessment will be based on how business principles explored in the course are applied such as the value proposition, the market-fit of the product/service, the identification of the target customer etc.

This module is reassessed solely on the basis of re-submitted coursework. There is no repeat written examination.
