Module Description: This module is one of the Exercise Professional suite. It is designed to equip students to plan, deliver and monitor safe and effective exercise programmes to clinical populations. It is aligned to the REPs Ireland award of Exercise for Health Specialist.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Articulate the case for exercise in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, using evidence based research
LO2 Conduct a client-centred exercise consultation using motivational interviewing techniques.
LO3 Plan, deliver and monitor safe and effective exercise programmes for individuals and groups with chronic diseases.
LO4 Acquire and apply up-to-date information on exercise prescription, pharmacology and treatment modalities for a range of clinical conditions.
LO5 Work ethically and professionally with other exercise and health professionals, cognisant of roles and limitations.

Personal Training (SPRT7023) or equivalent REPS Ireland recognised qualification.
 
Indicative Content
Clinical conditions
Obesity, hypertension, COPD & asthma, osteoporosis, chronic back pain, diabetes, dyslipidemia, depression & anxiety, arthritis. Inactive and de-conditioned individuals will also be considered in this module.
Epidemiology, Pathophysiology & Pharmacology
Epidemiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology as they relate to the above listed clinical conditions.
Clinical Exercise Programming
Programming considerations for the above listed clinical conditions.
Screening and Contra-indications
Specific screening and exercise contra-indications related to the above listed clinical conditions.
Exercise Consultation Skills
Motivational interviewing and behaviour change theory as they apply to clients with clinical conditions.
Referral Pathways and Schemes
GP and other health professional referral pathways to exercise. Working in a pluri-disciplinary environment. The role and limitations of the clinical exercise instructor.

Assessment Description
Case study. The students will present a case study on a client with at least two of the chronic diseases covered in the module. The case study will include sections on behaviour change and motivational techniques, clinical and pharmacological implications, methods of assessing baseline fitness and readiness to exercise, development of an exercise programme and strategies to reduce the risk of a return to sedentary behaviour on cessation of the programme. The case study will be based on a real client with whom the student has worked for a minimum of 4 sessions.
