Module Description: This module introduces business students with a particular interest in IS / IT to Business Finance. The module examines the financial management of a company's resources while placing an emphasis on IS & IT developments.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Perform detailed cash budgeting with particular reference to larger organisations.
LO2 Apply discounting techniques to calculate present values that reflect the time value of money.
LO3 Identify and apply the various investment appraisal techniques available to financial managers.
LO4 Evaluate company or divisional performance using appropriate measures.
LO5 Evaluate sources of finance and calculate weighted average cost of capital.

Indicative Content
The Time Value of Money
Apply discounting techniques. Use the cost of capital to calculate present values. Perform annuity and perpetuity calculations.
Cash Budgeting
Perform detailed cash budgeting. Opportunity costs, relevant costing. Differentiate between cash flow and profit. The role of shared services centres such as I.T, Treasury or Finance regarding cash budgeting.
Investment Appraisal Techniques
Payback, Discounted Payback, Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, Accounting Rate of Return. The role of a shared services centre such as I.T, Treasury or Finance in evaluating divisions requests for capital.
Performance Management
Financial & non financial performance measures. The Balanced Scorecard. SWOT analysis. Bench-marking. Divisional performance. Residual Income and Return on Investment. The role of a shared services centre such as I.T, Treasury or Finance in evaluating divisional performance.
Sources of Finance
Long term, medium term and short term financing. Debt & Equity. The Stock Market. The Weighted Average Cost of Capital (W.A.C.C.)
