Module Description: |
Motor development refers to the development of a child’s bones and muscles, and their ability to move around and manipulate their environment. This module will be delivered through the lens of Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS), which are basic observable patterns of movement e.g. running, jumping, hopping, throwing, catching and striking among others. The pedagogical emphasis will be placed on the practical and theoretical aspects of planning, teaching and evaluating effective activity sessions to develop these FMS among children.

Stages of motor development. Introduction to fundamental theories of motor learning.

Measurement and Application of Fundamental Movement Skills
Definition and explanation of Fundamental Movement Skills. Categories of Fundamental Movement Skills and relevance for lifelong participation in physical activity and sport. Relationship between Fundamental Movement Skills. Employ a qualitative analysis of Fundamental Movement Skills using validated tools such as the Test of Gross Motor Development II to assess competence in these skills.

Teaching of Fundamental Movement Skills
Planning and implementation of activities to develop Fundamental Movement Skills for children.

Reflection and Evaluation of Fundamental Movement Skills Sessions
Reflect and evaluate on practice used to develop Fundamental Movement Skills, this will be used to inform future teaching. This will be based on key criteria associated with effective coaching.

The impact of FMS on children and adolescent participation and physical literacy.
