Module Description: Excel based application of financial concepts (e.g. budgeting, financial performance ratios and investment appraisal) to practically evaluate the financial planning process.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Calculate projections and evaluate the outcomes using the various investment appraisal methods
LO2 Assemble figures to produce an accurate cashflow forecast for an organisation using spreadsheets
LO3 Calculate the costings, break even analysis, return on marketing investment and mark up using spreadsheets
LO4 Evaluate the government agencies which promote industrial development and provide assistance to start up and established companies
LO5 Appraise the forms of finance for a company given its financial requirements including the utilisation of KPIs

Indicative Content
Investment Appraisal
Appraisal of capital expenditure - payback; average rate of return; net present value; internal rate of return. All calculations performed using a spreadsheet package.
Budgeting and Financial Forecasting
The role of budgeting and forecasting; preparation of cashflow statements and projected final accounts using if statements in a spreadsheet package.
Sources of Finance
Types of finance - short, medium and long term; evaluation of cost of finance; state aid - LEO and Enterprise Ireland supports.
Interpretation of Accounts
Customer lifetime value; CLV calculation; ratio analysis; break even; mark up; return on marketing investment. All calculations performed using a spreadsheet package and comparisons made with historical figures and/or future projections.
