Module Description: To introduce students to the actual teaching of Home Economics in schools through a supported school classroom placement working with (an) experienced Home Economics teacher(s).
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Prepare and develop effective activities to explore and support their development as a beginning Home Economics teacher in the school setting.
LO2 Discuss a variety of pedagogical approaches to teach Home Economics in an effective and enthusiastic manner.
LO3 Display accuracy of factual knowledge in basic Home Economics concepts and how best to teach them in the post-primary classroom.
LO4 Exhibit professional learning in terms of cooperatively and individually managing basic elements of the Home Economics lesson effectively in the school setting.
LO5 Work closely with the cooperating teacher and other teaching colleagues in the school setting to support the learning of students in Home Economics lessons.
LO6 Display evidence of critical appraisal of lessons observed and participated in and of feedback received from the cooperating teachers and other mentors.
LO7 Act on feedback received from cooperating teachers and other staff on any aspects of planning and teaching Home Economics lessons.
LO8 Design more appropriate Home Economics lessons and lesson tasks for future school placements.

Preparation for School Placement
Planning and discussing appropriate lessons in Home Economics in line with curriculum requirements.
Placement activities in a school context
Observing lessons. Team teaching parts of Home Economics lessons with a qualified teacher. Supporting student learning in Home Economics lessons. Working effectively with a cooperating Home Economics teacher.
Reflection on Practice
Reflecting on the experience of observing Home Economics teaching in school and putting the curriculum into practice. Safety in the Home Economics classroom. Useful resources to support the teaching of Home Economics in the post-primary school. Teaching, learning and assessment in the Home Economics classroom.
Planning for future classroom experience
Feedback on placement. Reflection on learning and drawing up action plans for future development in respect of classroom practice and placements in Home Economics.

Assessment Description
1 x 3,000-word professional practice placement teaching portfolio. The portfolio will be broken into key parts with ongoing feedback provided.
