Module Description: |
This module introduces the theoretical concepts and processes underlying the organisation and implementation of successful, safe and legally-compliant sports events. The module incorporates an experiential pedagogical approach whereby learners apply their knowledge within the context of a ‘real-life’ sports event and contribute meaningfully to each phase of this event’s life cycle (planning, implementation, promotion and evaluation).

Indicative Content |
Sports Events and Conferences in Society
Sports Events and Conferences (i.e. sporting and/or academic) from a sociological and economic perspective. An introduction to the sports event and conference management sector. Case studies of pertinent local, national and international sporting and related conference events, including at least one event within an educational setting.

Leadership, Teamwork and Communication
The importance of strong leadership and constructive team dynamics during the planning and implementation of sports and conference events. Event structures and governance. Positive engagement and communication with stakeholders.

Event Conceptualisation
Event planning theories. Devising an event concept, vision and experience. Proposal and bidding process.
|
Fundraising, Promotions and Public Relations
Fundraising methods to include grant schemes, internal funding, external stakeholders and corporate sponsorship. Engagement with prospective sponsors. Sports marketing, promotion and public relations. Leveraging the mass media and press releases. Ethical and effective utilisation of social media platforms to promote sports events.

Event Operations
Event plan, project management and logistical operations (including but not limited to; running order, venue, volunteers, attendees, parking, safety, communication platforms, specialised equipment).

Governance, Safety and Compliance.
Event governance and internal reporting, health and safety obligations, insurance, HR compliance; budgeting and finances, contracts, child protection, licences and permits, GDPR compliance, sustainability and environmental impact.

Event Legacy
Post event evaluation and debrief to include event impact, legacy, SWOT analysis, participant feedback and review of designated metrics.

Theoretical Applications and Experiential Learning
Application of theoretical principles within the context of a real-life sporting and conference events. Learners will immerse themselves within the organising committee of a designated sporting event and will be expected to demonstrate a meaningful contribution throughout each state of the event’s life cycle (planning, promotion, implementation and post-event evaluation).
