Logistics and supply chain management are studied at an advanced level in this module, with particular emphasis on supply mapping, strategic formulation and presentations by guest lecturers on biopharmaceutical or other industry global supply chains.

Appraise the strategic concepts and models including the logistics and supply chain structures. |

Summarise logistics and supply management operations from both an industry and global perspective. |

Appraise supply chain structures in terms of inventory management, procurement, warehousing and distribution. |

Evaluate successful operations with particular reference to financial flows, budget management and information systems. |
LO5 |
Defend the role and selection of contract management and other forms of relationships, including outsourcing/insourcing, offshoring/re-shoring, leasing, and legal frameworks (e.g. EU directives), in selected case study organisations. |

Upstream and downstream flows, materials management, demand forecasting, distribution
management; structures and models.

Logistics and Supply Chain Strategies
Lean and agile supply chains, partnership development, outsourcing, supply base rationalisation,
managing risk in the supply chain, time-based competition, sustainability management.

Financial management, budget planning and information systems
The financial management and budget planning required to support the logistics and supply chain/network architecture and management information systems (MIS) required to support the global models.

Customer Service and Order Fulfillment
Market-driven supply chains; customer and supplier relationship management (downstream and upstream). How effective supply chain or supply network management can deliver competitive advantage. The role of critical standards such as FDA and NHRA in the biopharmaceutical sector or equivalent standards in other industries. Supply chain optimisation. The role of performance measurement.

Sub-contracting, outsourcing, offshoring and re-shoring
Operations management decision to 'make or buy' and select a domestic or a global supplier/partner; the difference between outsourcing and offshoring; the complexity of sourcing supply or outsourcing in international markets; the resources required to successfully outsource globally; the dynamics of offshoring and re-shoring; the legal frameworks associated.
