Module Description: This module focuses on the consolidation of a B2-B2+ level of German as described by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
This module focuses on skills tailored to the specific needs of the international business sector. It also imparts an advanced level of knowledge and appreciation of 20th and 21st century arts in the German-speaking regions, as well as enhancing the requisite academic analytical skills.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Translate a range of texts in the areas of international business, journalism, and current affairs in the German-speaking regions, from German into English and English into German.
LO2 Critically analyse and provide a detailed evaluation of a variety of cultural and media materials from the Twentieth and the Twenty First Century in Austria, Switzerland and Germany (film and media studies, visual art and short stories).
LO3 Research and examine specific aspects of contemporary Business culture in the German-speaking regions (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) in an effective and appropriate manner in an academic essay or project format.
LO4 Consolidate knowledge of advanced grammatical structures necessary to consistently produce a B2 - B2+ level of language structures.
LO5 Communicate orally to a high standard of competency (B2 - B2+), in topics of international business and trade, and/or culture and the arts.

Advanced level of German (CEFR level B2) in speaking, reading and writing
 
Indicative Content
Translation/Writing Skills
Applied advanced practice (building on Semester 1 skillset) in the translation of varied texts (journalistic, current affairs, business and literary) from English to German and German to English.
Cultural Studies
Critically analyse and discuss key aspects of culture and media (film studies, short stories and visual art) in the German-speaking regions in the Twentieth and Twenty First Century. Evaluation of these in their socio-historical/geo-political contexts. Identification and application of suitable research methodologies to communicate the above in academic essay format.
Business Studies
Examine and critically evaluate topics of contemporary business culture in the German-speaking regions.
Grammar
Substantial reinforcement and practical application of complex grammatical elements relevant to a B2/B2+ level of the target language (direct and indirect report speech)
Oral/Presentation Skills
Enable students to develop communication skills of a sufficient standard to: deliver effective oral presentations in a professional manner; participate in group/class discussions as required; converse individually or in a paired context to enhance fluency.
