Module Description: |
This module focuses on the consolidation of a B2 - B2+ as described by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The module engages with topics in international business as well as focusing on the development of knowledge and appreciation of modern 20th and 21st century German culture and media. The module develops receptive and production skills as well as translation skills and grammatical competence.

LO1 |
Translate a range of texts in the areas of business, journalism, current affairs and literature from German into English and English into German. |
LO2 |
Critically analyse and evaluate a variety of cultural and media materials from the 20th and 21st century in Germany (film and media studies, visual art and short stories). |
LO3 |
Research and examine specific aspects of contemporary business culture in Germany in an
effective and appropriate manner in academic essay format. |
LO4 |
Consolidate/reinforce knowledge of advanced grammatical elements through a range of
complex contexts using reading and writing skills. |
LO5 |
Communicate orally to a high level of competency, engaging in interactive; presentation; and
interpretative activities in an international context. |

Indicative Content |
Translation/Writing Skills:
Applied advanced practice in the translation of varied texts (journalistic, current affairs, business and
literary) from English to German and German to English.

Cultural Studies
Critically analyse and discuss key aspects of German culture and media (film studies, short stories and visual art) in the Twentieth and Twenty First Century. Evaluation of these in their
socio-historical/geo-political contexts. Identification and application of suitable research methodologies to communicate the above in academic essay format.

Business Studies
Examine and critically evaluate topics of contemporary business culture in Germany. Sample topics include:
exports and imports, franchises and entrepreneurial mindset.

Grammar
Substantial reinforcement and practical application of complex grammatical elements relevant to a B2
level of the target language (for example passive voice, adjectival phrases, phrasal verbs, relative clauses)

Oral/Communication Skills
Enable students to develop communication skills of a sufficient standard to be able to do the following:
deliver effective oral presentations in a professional manner; participate in group/class discussions as required; converse individually or in a paired context to enhance fluency.
