Module Details

Module Code: ARCH6088
Title: Materials & Finishes
Long Title: Materials & Finishes
NFQ Level: Fundamental
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2019/20 ( September 2019 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 5810 - Architecture & Urban Environment
Module Delivered in: 2 programme(s)
Module Description: This modules explores in detail materials & finishes for domestic and non-domestic interior architecture projects. It investigates aesthetic & functional properties, and how their selection will inform design strategies and define interior spaces.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Illustrate an understanding of the impact material & finishes selection has on the character of interior spaces and how they are experienced.
LO2 Identify a range of suitable materials & finishes and their application & assembly; in a scaled, dimensioned & annotated technical drawing.
LO3 Communicate a coherent materials & finishes strategy for a detailed interior architecture project.
LO4 Integrate relevant regulations and standards in the selection of 'fit for purpose' materials & finishes.

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

Indicative Content
Principles
Principles of materials and finishes specification specifically for interior architecture projects. Emphasis is on research & analysis of exemplary architecture and interiors to understand their context, selection, application and classification.
Materials and Finishes
Exploration of materials and finishes including; timber, stone, ceramics, vinyls, polymers, natural and composite materials etc. and their relationship to the character of design studio projects.
Building Regulations
Understanding and application of the relevant regulations & standards in the selection of 'fit for purpose and appropriate materials & finishes.
