Module Details

Module Code: ARCH8012
Title: Design Studio Distillation
Long Title: Design Studio Distillation
NFQ Level: Advanced
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2019/20 ( September 2019 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 15
Field of Study: 5810 - Architecture & Urban Environment
Module Delivered in: 1 programme(s)
Module Description: The module enables students to apply building regulations, develop and detail the construction and materiality of a complex interior project, realised though visual, virtual and physical mediums.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Appraise, integrate, apply and evaluate a variety of building regulations pertinent to a complex interior architectural project.
LO2 Refine the construction detailing and materiality of a complex interior architectural scheme to tender stage.
LO3 Evaluate and distinguish fit for purpose finishes for a complex piece of interior architecture
LO4 Assemble specification and production drawing information to support a complex interior architecture design scheme.
LO5 Demonstrate an integrated engagement with the urban context through the final synthesised scheme design.
LO6 Simulate a complex interior architectural scheme through visual, physical and virtual representation.
LO7 Organise time and resources effectively to complete an exhibition of work to a deadline.

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Assessments

Coursework
Assessment Type Project % of Total Mark 10
Timing Week 2 Learning Outcomes 1
Assessment Description
Compliance report- synthesising the design development to achieve compliance with building regulations.
Assessment Type Project % of Total Mark 10
Timing Week 10 Learning Outcomes 2,3,4
Assessment Description
Propose materiality, furniture, fixtures and fittings (FF&E) scheme for the proposed design project in a Materials & Specification Schedule
Assessment Type Project % of Total Mark 20
Timing Week 10 Learning Outcomes 1,2,3,5
Assessment Description
Prepare detailed design drawings (master plans, site plans, floor plans, internal arrangements, elevations, sections and details).
Assessment Type Project % of Total Mark 50
Timing Sem End Learning Outcomes 5,6,7
Assessment Description
Use visual, virtual and physical demonstrations to communicate a complex interior architecture scheme with fit for purpose materiality, strategy, masterplanning and circulation that demonstrates an appropriate synthesis of the design challenges with an innovative conceptual approach. The final design should demonstrate rational design decision making, horizontal and vertical circulation, mechanical and electrical servicing rationale, fire safety and accessibility compliance, sustainability strategy and interior design. A strong emphasis of the grading rubric will be placed on the student's ability to evaluate challenges/restrictions and synthesise well balanced design solutions.
Assessment Type Project % of Total Mark 10
Timing Sem End Learning Outcomes 5,6,7
Assessment Description
Create an exhibition to visually communicate your final design.
No End of Module Formal Examination
Reassessment Requirement
Coursework Only
This module is reassessed solely on the basis of re-submitted coursework. There is no repeat written examination.

The University reserves the right to alter the nature and timings of assessment
