Module Details

Module Code: ARCH8018
Title: Design Studio Analysis
Long Title: Design Studio Analysis
NFQ Level: Advanced
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2019/20 ( September 2019 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 15
Field of Study: 5810 - Architecture & Urban Environment
Module Delivered in: 1 programme(s)
Module Description: The module enables students to develop advanced skills in researching physical and functional building use, frameworks for conceptualisation, resolving a coherent sophisticated piece of interior architecture to a development stage.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Appraise the urban context of the existing building and respond to its potential through design strategies.
LO2 Propose a research strategy and brief for an interior architecture project informing a clear design path to a master plan.
LO3 Prepare a rigorous architectural research process to inform conceptualisation of an interior architecture project.
LO4 Compose and design a conceptual approach for a complex building interior.
LO5 Evaluate research inputs, manipulate various design solutions, refine and synthesise a developed design.
LO6 Employ technical knowledge to the design project through iterative ideation.
LO7 Discriminate materiality and function within the design to be fit for purpose.

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

The student should have an advanced knowledge of conceptualisation frameworks, Autocad, hand visualisation and modelling to undertake this module.

Indicative Content
Major Interior Architecture project
Identifying the client and building use. Survey the proposed building and create a research report taking into account its history, siting, aspect, traffic flow, opportunities, limitations, urban context, opportunities, intended function, structure, typology Entity relationship diagram and outcomes that may impact a design.
Research
Collect thoughts, review constraints, reframe the challenge, create a visible reminder. Research the building function, review the demographic, explore the extremes of the user demographic, develop a map of the functional spaces informing an entity relationship diagram (ERD).
Client user and usage brief
Create a client brief informed by the research including outline compartmentations and an entity relationship diagram. Interpret the data to condense knowledge from discovery into insights and opportunities pointing the way for masterplanning.
Concept development
Ideate concepts to create a unique approach to the building adaption.
Masterplanning & Design Development
Refine master-planning and design options through ideation to develop a coherent building adaption and structural solution.
