Module Description: |
This module communicates the design and construction of domestic windows, doors, stairs, fireplaces and flues, and domestic precast concrete floors. It also introduces the student to domestic internal and external finishes.

Illustrate and communicate the main criteria affecting the design, construction and choice of domestic windows and doors in various materials. |
LO2 |
Identify and relate the design and calculation of domestic stairs with particular regard to relevant building regulations. |
LO3 |
Classify and describe suitable types of precast floor systems for use in domestic construction. |
LO4 |
Recognize, describe and/or assess internal and external finishes and their defects. |
LO5 |
Identify and communicate the design and construction of domestic fireplaces, flues and chimneys with particular regard to the relevant building regulations. |

Indicative Content |
Windows and Doors
Aluminium, uPVC, Aluclad, GRP and Timber construction. Roof lights and fire escape. Selection, performance and detailing.

Stairways and Ramps
Types, construction, calculations. Building Regulations and Universal Access.
|
Precast Concrete Domestic Floors
Types, construction and detailing of both ground and upper floors.
|
Internal and External Finishes
Floors, walls and ceilings construction and performance. Wet and dry systems. Paintwork. Partitions and linings.
|
Fireplaces, Flues and Chimneys
Principles of design and construction including DPC and defect inspection. Environmental issues.
