Module Description: |
This module introduces the student to domestic scale construction and develops the student's understanding of the construction process in general terms and in specific detail. The module covers construction and detailing of traditional and passive house techniques. External works and service provision will also be studied. The module includes current developments in the use of information technology in the construction environment. It also covers manual drafting techniques, and the student will develop a sketchbook of construction details related to the lecture topics.

Describe and compare the fundamentals of upto three-storey domestic scale construction & detailing up to roof level for traditional and passive house options |

Describe and apply a range of options for construction & detailing at each level of the construction process, including associated external works and services |

Evaluate the potential for failure of each element of a building and select & apply appropriate pre-emptive action. |
LO4 |
Convey construction & detailing solutions at each level using technical drawing and sketching techniques on paper. |

Indicative Content |
External Works, foundations and ground floors
External works for construction projects, choice of foundation type and rising wall. Solid and suspended ground floors. Thermal insulation. Radon.

Walls and opes
Cavity and single-leaf walls. Thermal insulation. Cill, jamb and lintel. Windows and doors.
|
Upper floors
Upper floor construction and detailing in timber. Stairs and trimmed opes.

Roofs
Flat roofs: Overhanging and parapet roofs in timber - construction & detailing. Joist sizing. Pitched roofs: Cut roofs and prefabricated truss roofs in timber - construction & detailing. Sizing of elements.

Passive House
Explain the concept of the passive house in line with each of the stages of domestic construction from foundation to roof level, compare traditional construction details with those of the passive house

IT in the Construction Environment
An introduction and overview of: Building Information Modelling softwares and their role in the construction process; modern surveying and setting out equipment, digital fabrication and modular construction.

Site Visit
Site visit to an active construction project.
