Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

Students enrolling on this module will have to have an intermediate knowledge of Sketchup software and AutoCAD to complete Assignments.

Indicative Content
3D VISUALISATION
Material naming Grouping. Convert 3D models from Sketchup into photorealistic rendering package such as Shaderlight, Vray or Lumion. Grouping and layering 'Sketch-up' objects and surfaces by material. Naming materials uniquely. Importing models, controlling scale, positioning and rotation. Navigating and orienting the model. Changing material finishes, lighting controls, emissivity, specularity, scale. controlling landscaping, sun-lighting, shadows and atmosphere. Setting up photo realistic renderings. Material specification in Shaderlight, lighting adjustments, settings, resolution, post production montage/effects in Photoshop.
3D Concept Generation Methods
Concept generation methods driven from site analysis, context and use adopting divergence/convergence, derivation methods, aggregation/segregation technique, translation channels, and development layers.
3D Printing
File export protocols 3D printing protocols & an introducing to 3D printing from Sketchup CURA software interface and controls. Breaking down existing design into components for 3D printing. Troubleshooting, printing and assembly.

Assessments

Coursework
Assessment Type Project % of Total Mark 35
Timing Week 6 Learning Outcomes 1,2,3,4
Assessment Description
Import an existing 3D environment into Sketchup, assign unique seamless materials to the model, give materials properties in Shaderlight and/or Lumion. Create artificial and natural lighting sources. Create a high resolution rendering that mimics a photorealistic environment.
Assessment Type Project % of Total Mark 30
Timing Week 9 Learning Outcomes 5
Assessment Description
Using a conceptualisation method, iterate a concept for realisation as a 3D model, printed or assembled. Document the process and present the artefact.
Assessment Type Project % of Total Mark 35
Timing Sem End Learning Outcomes 4,5
Assessment Description
Convert or create an existing design 3D model to print on a 3D printer. Break the model down into components that would be feasibly and successfully printed. Assemble model for assessment. Include scaled entourage if required
No End of Module Formal Examination
Reassessment Requirement
Coursework Only
This module is reassessed solely on the basis of re-submitted coursework. There is no repeat written examination.
