Module Description: This module explores the Building Control Act and principles of building codes, legislation and principles for Universal Design relevant to Interior Architecture, and how they are applied to domestic and non-domestic Interior Architecture design.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Research, analyse and evaluate the impact of the Building Control Act and relevant Building Regulations and standards on the overall design strategy of an interior architecture project.
LO2 Analyse and apply the relevant sections of the Building Regulations Parts B, K & M and their Technical Guidance Documents as they relate to interior architecture projects.
LO3 Consolidate relevant regulations and legislation into the overall design of an interior architecture project.
LO4 Integrate relevant regulations and standards into interior architecture projects.
LO5 Incorporate principles of Universal Design into an interior design project.

Indicative Content
Principles of Building Codes & Legislation
Basic principles of Building Codes & Legislation, and their impact on Interior Architecture design projects.
Design
Ability to explore and formulate design solutions in compliance with the relevant regulations and standards, including appropriate materials selection.
Legislation & Standards
Understand and comply with Building Regulations, with particular focus on Technical Guidance Document's Part B: Fire (B1, B2 & B3), Part K: Stairways, Ladders, Ramps & Guards and Part M: Access and Use, but also Techincal Guildance Document E: Sound and Technical Guidance Document G: Hygiene; Application of BS 6465 Part 1 Sanitary Installations; application of awareness of universal design with reference to Buildings for Everyone (NDA).
Building Control Act
Awareness of the Building Control Act and introduction to forms, procedures and general content of Fire Safety Certificate and Disability Access Certificate applications.
