Module Details

Module Code: CIVL7029
Title: Integrated Waste Management
Long Title: Integrated Waste Management
NFQ Level: Intermediate
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2019/20 ( September 2019 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 5822 - Civil Engineering
Module Delivered in: 2 programme(s)
Module Description: This module examines various waste types and waste treatment technologies and determines their effect on the environment. This module will enable the learner to establish various methods of treating different types of waste (municipal solid waste, industrial waste, hazardous waste and agricultural wastes) within the current legislative framework, while minimising the environmental impacts through appropriate mitigation measures.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Classify, characterise and determine the potential environmental impacts of various solid, liquid and gaseous wastes.
LO2 Compare and contrast waste strategies and waste treatments, considering both national and international waste legislation and policy.
LO3 Prepare a preliminary design of an element of waste management infrastructure.
LO4 Review current waste licensing requirements and investigate appropriate mitigation measures to reduce the potential environmental impacts.
LO5 Perform a preliminary waste audit for a specific household/business.

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

Indicative Content
Types of waste
Quantify the amount of waste produced. Classify solid, liquid and gaseous waste from various sources including hazardous and non-hazardous municipal, commercial, industrial and agricultural wastes. Characterise their physical, chemical and biological characteristics, and determine their effects on the environment.
Waste treatment methods
Overview of treatment methods for solid, liquid and gaseous wastes. Waste management hierarchy, including prevention, minimisation, reuse, recycling, composting, anaerobic digestion, energy recovery and disposal, including landfill design and wastewater treatment.
Legislation
National and international legislation and policy including, the Waste Framework Directive, the Landfill Directive, the WEEE Directive and the Packaging Directive, the Waste Management Act, government policies and Irish waste strategies.
Auditing
Including data-gathering and assessment, input-output analysis, mitigation measures, improvement measures, integration of treatment methods and reporting on audits.
Waste licensing
Responsible agents for granting, monitoring and enforcing waste licenses. Requirements for waste permits, waste licensing, ELV. Environmental impacts of various technologies.
Waste management
Technical and environmental analysis of various management systems. Integration of waste management techniques, promotion of effective recycling through product design and location of reliable markets, preliminary design of infrastructure
