Module Description: This skill centred module enables beginner guitar students to develop their fundamental, technical, rhythmic and stylistic performance skills through the study of guitar accompaniment. Students develop their ability to learn independently and critically analyse relevant repertory.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Display consolidated fundamental instrumental skills through melodic, rhythmic and arpeggiated chordal playing.
LO2 Perform a stylistically authentic programme of song accompaniment
LO3 Apply fundamental technical skills to play a straightforward melody and chord sequence reading from a notated chord/lead sheet
LO4 Demonstrate musical sensitivity and awareness through the ability to interact with other musicians
LO5 Inform performances through critical analysis of relevant stylistic recordings

Indicative Content
Technique
Core technique will be developed and consolidated through the study of: 1. Correct posture and holding of the instrument. 2. Correct hand positions. 3. Right hand plectrum technique, rhythmic and fingerpicking patterns. 4. Left hand legato technique. 5. First position chords: major, minor, dominant, diminished, and augmented. 6. Scales and arpeggios appropriate to the studied repertoire.
Etudes
Study of a broad range of material addressing technical and stylistic challenges.
Group Lessons
Development of ensemble skills, with an emphasis on vocal accompaniment.
Reading
Study of stylistically appropriate notated charts. These will combine music notation and chord symbols.
Scales and arpeggios
Study of basic scales and arpeggios.
Repertory Engagement
Analysis of relevant repertory. This will range from early 20th century folk song to contemporary popular song styles.
