Module Description: This module will examine the importance of physical activity for health and well-being across the lifespan. It will identify health risks related to sedentary behaviour and provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills to design, implement and evaluate physical activity interventions to improve individuals quality of life and reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
Physical Activity and Health
Assessment of the impact of regular physical activity on markers of health. In particular the relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, dementia and physical fraility will be examined.
Ethical Considerations
Ethical responsibilities and principles relevant for working with children and older adults in a physical activity promotion domain.
Physical Activity Promotion for Older Adults
Appropriate goal setting, screening and assessment procedures, components of fitness, principles of training, resourcing and exercise adaptations for the older adult. Application of the above to one case study group.
Physical Activity Promotion for Children
Age appropriate physical activity (PA) promotion and fundamental movement skills (FMS) development. Adaptation and progression of content as appropriate. Assessment procedures to assess both FMS and PA. Content will be linked closely with a large scale school based interventions such as Project Spraoi.
Determinants of Physical Activity
The importance of psychosocial and environmental determinants with regard to participation in structured exercise. Use of evidence based research to explore strategies, barriers and facilitators to increase participation rates. The importance of multi-agency involvement in intervention design and delivery.
Evaluation of Effective Interventions
Evaluation of methodological approaches relating to measurement of physical activity, programme design, programme implementation and evaluation. Critical analysis will also be conducted on outcome results from large scale research interventions.

Assessment Description
Each student will plan, deliver and evaluate a four week physical activity programme for a group of children and/or older adults. There will be a minimum of two contact hours per week with the target population. Formative feedback will be provided each week from Week 7 to the date of submission.
