Module Description: This module will introduce students to the theoretical concepts underlying health promotion practices within contemporary workplace settings. Students will apply this knowledge synergistically alongside existing competencies within the realms of physical activity promotion, exercise-instruction and lifestyle behaviour change to design feasible, tailored and evidence-based workplace health promotion initiatives.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Examine the relationship between wellbeing, workplace productivity and job satisfaction
LO3 Compare current trends and practices within the corporate wellness industry and evaluate the validity of such trends and practices in contemporary workplace settings
LO4 Conduct a tailored and multi-component health needs analysis within a contemporary workplace setting
LO5 Design and present a feasible and evidence-based workplace health-promotion initiative to include an implementation and evaluation plan

Fundamental health promotion concepts
The Ottawa Charter; determinants of health; ecological perspective; salutogenic approach; settings approach; research methods in health promotion; Healthy Ireland Framework for Health and Wellbeing and related policy documents.
The contemporary workplace as a health promotion setting
Socio-economic and cultural shifts within the workplace and their impact on employee wellbeing; the ‘health-promoting workplace’ concept and framework; organisational cultures; physical working environments; employee absenteeism and presenteeism; job satisfaction; work-life balance; prevalence and pathophysiology of occupational health issues such as work-related stress, anxiety, depression, musculoskeletal disorders; concurrent health-related issues and risk factors; employer’s perspective; cost-benefit of employee wellness programmes.
Corporate wellness industry
Current industry trends and practices; future projections; industry engagement; corporate case studies/site visits; employee wellness programmes and relevant accreditations such as IBEC's ‘KeepWell Mark’; interdisciplinary stakeholders.
Theoretical application and programme design
Needs assessment; health screening; educational initiatives; health coaching; behaviour change; communication and motivational interviewing; occupational health psychology; designing and implementing tailored interventions; physical activity within the workplace; assistive technologies; project evaluation.
