Module Description: While the advancement of knowledge through original research is the core component of PhD education, additional skills development can also be facilitated through external (to CIT) learning opportunities such as workshops, seminar series or short courses provided by an accredited training provider, professional body or equivalent.
The aim of this module is to facilitate professional development and provide research students with an opportunity to apply for recognition of learning and skills developed at external learning events. Students must seek the prior approval of the Dean of Graduate Studies to enrol on this module.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Indicative Content
External Learning Experience
Completion of this module requires the student to participate in an external learning experience which may include workshops, seminars and/or training (including online training). The module encourages learners to make their own choice of external learning event to attend for study to permit the development of individual knowledge, research and professional development skills. Learners are advised to consult with their supervisor prior to attending the external learning experience. The learning must not be accrediated (ECTS credits) by the external provider. The learning must be substantial in nature and worthy of recognition as 5 ECTS. The Dean of Graduate Studies must approve enrolment onto this module.
Personal Effectiveness / Development
The learner will operate in an independent and self-directed manner, showing initiative to accomplish defined goals. The learner will develop their communication skills and be able to explain to others a viewpoint's merits.

Assessment Description
Student presents a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate achievement of the module learning outcomes.
