Module Description: This module further develops key musicianship skills integrating perceptual and analytical skills in a performance-based practicum.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Perceive and identify key harmonic, textural and formal elements in a musical extract and contextualise them in a musical style.
LO2 Sightread, perform and memorise a range of songs and ensemble pieces.
LO3 Write in strict counterpoint in major and minor modes in three parts, adding a number of voice parts to a cantus firmus
LO4 Recognise a full range of musical instruments and their typical use in combination.
LO5 Describe the relationship between an instrument's structure and its tone and range.

Indicative Content
Aural Skills
Listening to and analysing a variety of pieces both instrumental and vocal from the 18th and 19th centuries to develop a sensitivity to style and confidence in identification of key features. Enhancement of the skills of memorisation and inner hearing as a subtext of learning in all areas of the course. Continuing development of sightsinging through a repertoire of solo and ensemble works to enhance the development of perceptual and reproductive skills
Analysis and Compositional Techniques
An introduction to the techniques of writing strict counterpoint in major and minor modes in three parts, employing the resources of strict counterpoint in adding various voice parts to a Cantus Firmus
Organology
A review of the major instruments of the Western tradition from medieval times to present including instruments of selected ethnic traditions. This encompasses an introduction to examples of score layout including conventions such as transposition.
